My father always had American saddle horses…3 at a farmer friend’s place and 2 being trained as 5 gaited. One he would show, the trainer the other. He was a country doctor when that meant answering the phone 24/7 and going back and forth to the hospital any time of the day or night for emergencies or delivering babies. He loved the life and it was because he always had his pals to visit and ride every day…get up at 4am, go out to feed, etc. and ride, unless he had an operation at 7:30 or an emergency. Then the farmer did the feeding. My dad. had serious things to attend to and horses understood and they had a wonderful time for 50 years.
